What liability insurance does a California wedding or quinceañera need?
Published 2026-10-06 by Insurance City Agency, LLC, CA License #6003045. Leer en español
A California wedding or quinceañera needs the liability certificate the hall wrote into the rental contract, naming the hall if the contract says so. No California insurance statute found for this page requires every host to buy a one-day policy. Workers compensation applies only if the host employs someone. The hall's year-round property policy is not the host's certificate.
Does a wedding or quinceañera hall require liability insurance in California?
The requirement, when there is one, is the rental contract, not a statewide insurance mandate this page can cite. Halls commonly ask for a certificate dated for the event, with the hall named as an additional insured, and they ask for it before they hand over the keys. A church that rents its hall to a family is in the same position: the congregation's own policy is explained on church insurance, and the renting family is a separate insured. A daycare fundraiser is a different operation from a quinceañera; the daycare license guide is Title 22 childcare insurance.
The product page for the one-day form is special event insurance. Setup of chairs by a janitorial vendor is janitorial insurance, not the host's event policy.
What if the wedding or quinceañera serves alcohol in California?
According to the ABC license-type catalog, Type 34, Daily Beer and Wine, and Type 37, Daily General, are temporary daily licenses issued to a valid nonprofit or other qualified organization for a fundraising event. They are not a family quinceañera license. A private host who gives alcohol away is not described by those daily types. A hall that already holds an on-sale license serves under that license, not under a new license the family invents.
Business and Professions Code section 25602 limits civil liability for furnishing alcohol to the rule that consumption, not serving, is the proximate cause, with the exception in section 25602.1 when a licensee, or a person required to be licensed, sells or furnishes alcohol to an obviously intoxicated minor and that act is the proximate cause of injury or death. A one-day liability form and a liquor-liability form are still separate questions to ask the carrier. This page does not state a required limit, because the statute does not set one.
Does the host need workers comp for a one-day event?
California Labor Code section 3700 applies when the host is an employer. A venue employee is the venue's employee. A cousin who volunteers is not, by that fact alone, an employee. A server the host pays for the night is an employee for that statute. Caterers who prepare and serve food at the wedding, and who do not run a dining room of their own, are described by WCIRB class 9082, Caterers, on the restaurant classification split. That class is the caterer's compensation filing, not a liability policy for the family.
The 2025 abbreviated listing also names 9095, Event Markets or Trade Shows. That line is for the business that runs the market, not for a single quinceañera host with no employees.
What should the host send with the quote form?
Send the hall's insurance page from the contract, the date, the guest count, whether alcohol is sold or given, whether anyone is paid, and whether a vendor will bring a certificate. Insurance City Agency, LLC reads that packet on the quote form.
Frequently asked questions
What liability insurance does a California wedding or quinceañera need?
The certificate the hall's contract asks for, if the contract asks. California insurance law cited here does not impose a one-day policy on every host. Compensation applies only when the host employs someone.
Can a family buy an ABC daily license for a quinceañera?
Type 34 and Type 37 daily licenses, as ABC describes them, are for a nonprofit or other qualified organization holding a fundraiser. They are not written as a family-party license.
Is the church's policy enough for a rented quinceañera?
The church policy insures the church. The rental contract usually asks the family for its own certificate naming the hall.
