What does a furniture store BOP cover in California?

Published 2026-10-06 by Insurance City Agency, LLC, CA License #6003045. Leer en español

A business owner’s policy for a California furniture store packages general liability for a customer injured in the showroom with property coverage for the contents and inventory at the location. It does not include workers compensation. Labor Code section 3700 still requires compensation from the first employee, and a delivery truck is a commercial auto policy, not a line inside the store package. This page does not print a premium.

What does a furniture store BOP cover in California?

Carriers use a business owner’s policy as a package for smaller shops: liability for injury or damage to other people, and property coverage for the business’s own contents. The statewide explanation of what that package leaves out is BOP cost factors and exclusions. The product page is business owner’s package insurance. A furniture showroom is one eligible kind of shop. It is not a guard company, and it is not a CSLB drywall license. The index for shops is shops, salons, and offices.

Exposure Where it is usually addressed
A shopper injured in an aisle, or by a floor model that tipsLiability portion of the package, subject to the form
Floor samples, warehouse stock, tenant improvements, and the building if the store owns itProperty portion. Values have to be stated. See commercial property.
An employee hurt lifting a sofa or operating a warehouse truckNot the package. Workers compensation, Labor Code section 3700.
The box truck that delivers to the customer’s houseNot the package. Commercial auto.
Rent the store loses while a covered fire is repairedOnly if the declarations show business-income coverage. Do not assume the package includes it.

A general retail shop is a different guide: retail store BOP in California, with city pages for Stockton and Modesto. Those pages are not this furniture class.

Does a furniture store BOP include workers comp in California?

No. Compensation is never folded into the package. Labor Code section 3700 applies from the first employee, including a part-time warehouse person. WCIRB classification 8015 is Stores — furniture — wholesale or retail. According to the 8015 phraseology, it applies to stores that sell or rent furniture, including couches, chairs, tables, dressers, bed frames, desks, and bookcases, and to furniture auctioneers. It includes galleries and showrooms, shipping, receiving, and delivery, and travel by salespeople or designers the store retains. A store that sells only mattresses and box springs is not 8015. WCIRB assigns that payroll to 8017(1), Stores — retail. A store that sells tile or cabinets, including kitchen or bath cabinets, is 8059. Installation of floor covering is a separate class, 9521(2). This page does not reprint a pure premium rate for any of those classes.

Does furniture delivery need commercial auto in California?

Yes, when the store’s truck moves inventory. The package at the showroom does not follow the box truck down the street. A personal auto policy is written for personal use. A Saturday delivery to a house in Manteca is business use. If employees use their own cars to drop off a lamp, the gap to ask about is hired and non-owned auto, explained on hired and non-owned auto. The truck policy is commercial auto. The 8015 footnote treats delivery payroll as part of the furniture-store compensation class. That is a workers-comp classification. It is not an auto policy.

What claims does a furniture showroom actually see?

The losses are the floor and the warehouse, not a chipper and not a guard’s firearm.

A floor model tips onto a child who climbed it. A loose rug in the aisle catches a shopper. A customer walks into the dock while a forklift is moving a crate. If the injured person is an employee, compensation is the statute. If the injured person is a customer, liability is the question. A sofa fails at the customer’s house after delivery. That is a products question on the liability form, and the form’s exclusions decide it. This page does not say every package pays that loss. A white-glove crew the store hired, with no certificate of its own, can become the store’s audit problem the same way an uninsured subcontractor does on a job site. Tell the application whether assembly happens in the showroom only, or inside the customer’s living room.

What should a furniture store bring to a California BOP quote?

Insurance City Agency, LLC does not publish a furniture-store premium. The form asks for the building and the trucks, not a slogan.
