Mobile mechanic insurance in California
Short answer: a mobile mechanic in California usually sorts four files, and none of them is a promise. Commercial auto for the van or truck that drives to the car. General liability for someone hurt while the work is happening at the curb, in a driveway, or in a parking stall. An equipment form, the inland marine idea in plain language, for scan tools, jacks, and compressors that travel. Workers' compensation if a helper is employed. A fixed shop's garage program is a cousin, not a copy. The trade hub is auto repair, tires, and garages. A sister explanation lives at Via Rapida, mobile mechanic insurance in California. This page does not repeat that one. It does not name a carrier. It does not say every rolling mechanic can be insured.
The service vehicle
The exposure starts with the miles. The van is not parked behind a bay. It is the shop. The California Department of Insurance commercial insurance guide says commercial auto can protect a company from liability for automobiles used in the business, and that a business auto policy schedules vehicles. Driving to a no-start in a Stockton carport, or to a brake job in a Modesto driveway, is business use. A personal auto policy is written for personal use. Owning the van in a personal name does not rewrite that. Schedule it on commercial auto, list the drivers, and say where it is garaged and how far a normal day runs.
A test loop in the customer's car is a different vehicle. So is a helper's sedan used to fetch a part. Hired and non-owned auto is the question for a car the business does not own. It does not replace the schedule on the service van, and it is not a tools policy. Whether a form responds when the customer's car is driven is a garage question as well. Read the form. Do not assume.
Someone hurt while the work is in the street or the driveway
The second file is people who are not the customer and property that is not the car on the jack. A neighbor trips on a cord. A door swings into a parked bicycle. A jack handle is left where a child walks. Those are bodily-injury and property-damage facts arising out of operations. The CDI guide describes casualty insurance as liability for negligent acts and omissions that cause injury or property damage to a third party, and it names commercial general liability among the common casualty lines. The product page is general liability.
Completed work that fails a week later, a car that rolls because a stand slipped, and a fluid spill on a stranger's concrete are all questions the form has to be asked. This page does not answer them with a payment. A market can also decline the account because the work is done in traffic, at night, or without a fixed address.
The customer's car is not the neighbor
General liability is a poor place to assume the car on the jack is covered. While the wheels are off, that car is often in the mechanic's care, custody, or control. Many liability forms set that property aside. Shops buy garage liability and garagekeepers for customer vehicles in a bay. A driveway job can raise the same care question even though there is no bay. Legal-liability wording and direct wording are different promises on a form, and only the form that is actually issued contains one of them. We do not promise either.
A Stockton shop page, auto repair shop insurance in Stockton, is about a fixed location. Use it for the bay. Use this page for the van. The two can belong to the same owner. They are not the same application if one operation never leaves the lot and the other never has a lot.
Scan tools, jacks, and compressors
The van policy is about the van. A scan tool stolen from the cargo area, or a compressor dented on the way to the next call, is business property in motion. The CDI guide lists contractors' equipment floaters among inland marine forms and describes inland marine as coverage for business property in transport. In plain language, that is a form written to follow the gear, not a form that only names a storage unit. List serial numbers and the owner's replacement figures. This page prints no price for that floater and names no company that sells it.
A helper who rides along
Labor Code section 3700 requires every employer, except the state, to secure compensation. The Department of Industrial Relations tells employers that workers' compensation is required even with one employee, and that a work injury is the employer's responsibility to cover through that insurance. An owner-operator with an empty passenger seat is not that employer. The day someone is paid to turn wrenches, ride to the call, or answer the phone for the business, the duty is open. Part-time does not erase it.
Tell the underwriter what the helper does: brakes, tires, diagnostics, or driving. The class code follows that description. This page does not print a rate. The product page is workers' compensation.
What the Bureau of Automotive Repair asks the business to register
Insurance is not the registration. The Bureau of Automotive Repair apply page, checked October 16, 2026, says an automotive repair dealer registration is required to diagnose, service, or repair vehicles for compensation, and that this includes mobile, referral, or sublet repair services. The same page says a BAR license is not required to work as a general automotive repair mechanic. Those two sentences are easy to mix. The business registration and an individual technician license are not the same document.
BAR's Write It Right guide quotes Business and Professions Code section 9880.1. It defines an automotive repair dealer as a person who, for compensation, repairs or diagnoses malfunctions of motor vehicles, or collects compensation for repair services that are referred or sublet. The same guide says section 9880.1(k) defines repair of motor vehicles as maintenance and repairs performed by an automotive repair dealer, excluding repairs made under a commercial business agreement and roadside services. A freeway jump-start and a brake job in a driveway are not automatically the same sentence. Read section 9880.1 and section 9884. This page does not decide which visits are roadside services, and it does not print a registration fee.
For a visit that is mobile automotive repair, Write It Right says the invoice has to include the address where the repairs were performed, or a description of the location if there is no street address, citing section 9884.8 and the related regulations. Bring the registration number that matches the van on that job. A contractor license from CSLB is a different board. Auto repair in a driveway is not, by itself, the minor-work rule for construction. Do not borrow a handyman classification to answer a BAR question.
A Central Valley day: Modesto, then Stockton
One illustration, not a claim story. A van kept in Modesto takes a morning brake job in a residential driveway, then a no-start in a Stockton apartment carport. The scheduled unit is the van. The jack, the scan tool, and the compressor are the equipment list. A person walking past the cord is the liability fact. The car with the wheels off is the care-and-custody fact. If a second person is paid to bleed the brakes, compensation is open. If the owner works alone, it is not. A certificate, should a fleet customer ask for one, only reports policies that already exist. Insurance Code section 384 says a certificate given as evidence of insurance is not a policy and does not amend, extend, or alter the coverage. See the certificate of insurance page.
The Valley does not change the state rules. It changes the garaging address, the miles, and who is standing in the driveway. Insurance City Agency, LLC can shop those facts. We do not promise the account will be written, and we do not promise a loss will be paid.
What to send before a conversation
- What the calls actually are: brakes, diagnostics, tires, batteries, or something else. Say whether any visit is only roadside assistance.
- Automotive repair dealer registration number, if one is held, and which van it matches.
- Year of the service vehicle, where it is garaged, how far a normal day runs, and every driver.
- Whether customer cars are road-tested, and whether any car the business does not own is used for parts runs.
- Tool list with the owner's replacement figures, especially what stays in the van overnight.
- Helper count. Zero is a different compensation file from one.
- Any fleet or property contract that asks for a certificate. Copy the wording. Do not assume an endorsement exists.
Questions
Will every mobile mechanic in California find a policy?
No. Underwriters read the repairs, the van, the tools, any helpers, and the losses. Some accounts are declined. This page does not promise a placement or a paid claim.
Why is the service van a commercial auto question?
The California Department of Insurance describes commercial auto as liability from automobiles used in the business, and a business auto policy as one that schedules vehicles. A van that drives to customer cars is business use. A personal auto policy is written for personal use.
Does general liability pay for damage to the customer's car?
General liability is aimed at injury and damage to other people and to property that is not in the mechanic's care. Damage to the car being repaired is usually a care, custody, and control question, which is why shops look at garagekeepers. This page does not say either form will pay.
What happens to tools stolen from the van?
Commercial auto responds to the scheduled vehicle. Gear that rides along is closer to an inland marine or equipment form. The Department of Insurance guide lists contractors' equipment floaters for business property in transport. Bring the owner's own replacement list. This page does not price it.
Does a mobile repair business register with the Bureau of Automotive Repair?
BAR's apply page says an automotive repair dealer registration is required to diagnose, service, or repair vehicles for compensation, and that this includes mobile repair. The same bureau says an individual BAR license is not required to work as a general automotive repair mechanic. Read the statute before treating a roadside stop and a driveway repair as the same registration fact.
