If a client or general contractor has ever told you “send me your COI before you start,” here’s exactly what they’re asking for — and why.
What a COI is
A certificate of insurance is a one-page proof that you carry insurance — it lists your general liability and other policies, the limits, and the dates. It doesn’t change your coverage; it just documents it for someone who needs to see it.
“Additional insured” and why it matters
Clients and GCs usually ask to be named additional insured on your policy. That extends certain protection to them for claims arising out of your work — which is why it’s a standard requirement on construction jobs and commercial contracts. Some also ask for a waiver of subrogation.
Getting one fast
The contractors and businesses we work with often need a COI the same day to land a job. As your broker, we issue them quickly and make sure the additional-insured and limit requirements in your contract are actually met — not just close.
