If a contract has ever said “name us as additional insured,” here’s what that actually does and why it’s such a common ask.
What it means
Adding someone as additional insured on your general liability policy extends certain protection to them for claims arising out of your work. So if a third party sues over something tied to your job, the GC or client you named can be covered under your policy too.
Additional insured vs. a certificate
People mix these up. A certificate of insurance just proves coverage exists. Additional insured status actually changes who’s protected — it’s added by endorsement to the policy, and the certificate then shows it.
Why it’s required
GCs, property owners, landlords, and event venues require it to push the risk of your work back onto your policy — it’s standard on construction and commercial contracts. Some also ask for a waiver of subrogation or primary & non-contributory wording.
