Collector Car Insurance

How is collector car insurance different from regular auto insurance?

A standard auto policy pays actual cash value: what an ordinary car of that year and mileage is worth after depreciation. For a restored 1967 pickup or a numbers-matching muscle car, that figure can be a fraction of what the car would bring at auction. Collector car insurance is usually written on an agreed value basis. You and the insurer settle on the car’s value when the policy starts, often backed by photos or an appraisal, and that is the amount paid if the car is a total loss. In exchange, the policy limits how the car is used.

What collector car insurance covers

  • Agreed value physical damage — collision and comprehensive at the value set on the policy.
  • Liability — the same road liability California requires of any registered car.
  • Spare parts and tools — the extra carburetor, trim and fenders on the garage shelf.
  • Restoration in progress — value that can rise as work is completed, on policies that offer it.
  • Flatbed towing — so the car is not dragged on a hook truck.
  • Car show and club event use — driving to shows, cruises and tours.

What collector policies require and exclude

Typical conditions: the car is kept in an enclosed, locked garage; it is not used for commuting, errands or work; there is another vehicle in the household for daily driving; and drivers have clean records. Many programs set an annual mileage plan. Exclusions usually include racing and timed events, mechanical breakdown, and use outside the agreed purpose. Daily drivers that happen to be old belong on a regular auto policy.

What are California historical vehicle plates?

California Vehicle Code §5004 provides permanent historical vehicle license plates. The DMV registration manual says they are issued to motor vehicles or trailers manufactured after 1922, at least 25 years old, and of historic interest; Horseless Carriage plates go to vehicles built in 1922 or earlier. Vehicles with these plates are limited to operation on the highway primarily for historical exhibition or similar noncommercial purposes such as parades or historic vehicle club activities, and the plates stay with the vehicle permanently. That limited-use pattern lines up with how collector policies are written, so tell us if your car carries them.

How much does collector car insurance cost?

Collector policies are priced around the agreed value you set and the limits on how the car is used. The inputs are the agreed value, the mileage plan, where and how the car is garaged, the drivers’ records, the other vehicles in the household, and the liability limits. Because collector programs restrict use, they are rated differently from a daily-driver auto policy. We show you the agreed value, the usage rules and the premium side by side so you can choose.

What we need to quote a classic or collector car

  • Year, make, model, VIN and current mileage.
  • Recent photos of all four sides, the interior and the engine bay.
  • The value you want insured, with an appraisal, recent comparable sales or restoration receipts.
  • Where it is garaged and how it is secured.
  • The daily-use vehicles in your household and every driver.
  • How you use it: shows, club runs, occasional weekend drives.
