These two get confused constantly, and the difference matters when you’re choosing coverage for a small business.
General liability: one coverage
General liability protects you against third-party claims — someone hurt at your business, or property you damage. It’s the foundation, and it’s often what clients and landlords require.
BOP: a bundle
A business owner’s policy (BOP) bundles general liability together with commercial property and usually business interruption — in one policy that’s typically cheaper than buying them separately.
Which one do you need?
- Rent or own space, have equipment or inventory? A BOP usually fits and saves money.
- Service business with little property — a contractor, say — you may just need standalone GL and skip what a BOP bundles.
- Either way, a BOP doesn’t include workers’ comp, commercial auto, or professional liability — those are separate.
Let’s match it to your business
